What is Rooibos?
Rooibos was first discovered in the 1700’s in South Africa. Though referred to as a ‘tea’, Rooibos is a herbal infusion, with no caffeine present in the brew.
Rooibos tea or red tea is a medicinal, herbal beverage. Rooibos tea leaves must be quickly dried after picking to prevent oxidation, this is called green rooibos. When rooibos tea leaves are fermented, they turn an orange red colour. The unfermented green rooibos tea has a higher level of antioxidants, while fermented rooibos tea has a sweeter taste.
Benefits of Rooibos
This red bush tea is widely known for their health promoting antioxidants, and for its favourable effect on blood pressure. It is also known to lower ‘bad’ cholesterol and raise ‘good’ cholesterol in people who are at risk of heart disease. Further benefits include fighting cancer and tumours.
How it’s Brewed
With its sweet, delicate, and earthy flavour, organic Rooibos tea is naturally caffeine-free and lower in tannins in comparison to its more popular counterparts, and is an excellent alternative to Black or Green Tea. This infusion is usually consumed like Black Tea, hot or cold.
Enjoy a perfect cuppa by following these steps;
- Pour ½ a cup of boiling water into a pot
- Add 1 ½ teaspoon of organic rooibos loose leaf tea or one rooibos tea bag
- Let it brew for 3-5 mins before stirring well and enjoy!
Red rooibos tea bags or loose-leaf packs can be enjoyed with milk, and sweeteners such as honey can be added for further flavour. However, both Red and Green Rooibos tea is naturally sweet on its own, therefore additions are not necessary. They can be enjoyed in diverse ways, whether hot or cold, in cocktails, desserts or even food. Rooibos iced tea and Rooibos lattes are in an increasing demand trend with the younger generation. There is no limit to the culinary adventures you can have with these teas.
